I had some extra space in my lipstick displays that I was eager to fill. Originally I thought I was going to purchase items from another highly anticipated lipstick release, until that brand experienced a ton of controversy. The silver lining in that debacle is that tweet brought my attention to Tōn Cosmetics.
Tōn, which is the french word for Tone, is a Canadian lipstick brand that matches you to your perfect shades of nude, red and pink lipsticks. How do they do this? With a very straightforward quiz on their website that asks a series of questions to help determine exactly which shades will be best for you.
After I completed the quiz, medium warm shades were said to be my perfect match. I was fortunate to receive the 3 that I was matched with, plus 2 additional shades that the founders chose for me to try out.
Nudes ($17 ea.)
I received 2 shades from their Nude Collection; Medium Warm 1 and Dark Warm 1. It is rare that I can find a pinky nude that doesn’t require a lipliner, so medium warm 1 was the confirmation I needed to see that the quiz actually worked!
The color on my complexion is perfect, and doesn't look chalky like other lipsticks I’ve tried. It glides on smoothly, and gives full opacity between 1-2 swipes. I also didn’t have any issues with it going on unevenly or splotchy, even though my lips were extremely dry on the day I tried them.
Dark Warm 1 isn’t a traditional nude on me, but it is the same shade as my top lip which gives a very natural “my lips but better,” look that will be great for my natural/no makeup days.
Red ($17)
I have never met a red lipstick that I didn’t love, but Medium Warm 2 is probably my favorite one that I’ve tried so far. The formula has more of an orange tint to offset the yellow in my skin tone, so it pops without being excessively bold. The pigmentation and vibrancy are truly amazing.
The one issue I had after I removed it was that it stained my lips slightly. It could be because my lips weren’t in the best shape when I tried them, or it can be from the dyes in the formula. This isn’t a deterrent at all, so next time I will make sure to use a lip primer or lip balm to prep my lips better.
Pinks ($17 ea.)
I received Medium Warm 3 and Fair Warm 3 from the pinks collection. Normally I shy away from pinks because they are either very matronly, or extremely girly, which doesn’t suit my single 30+ personality. I didn’t have that issue with these.
Medium Warm 3 was the sheerest of all the shades, and it also had a slight shimmer. Like the red, it has an orange base to offset the yellow in my complexion, and isn’t too bold or girly of a pink. I have a few beauty marks on my lips that I could still see through the formula, but there was enough coverage to add a subtle pink tint to my lips.
Fair Warm 3 is the boldest of the shades I received. It is a hot pink with a coral base to compliment warm complexions. While it is a barbie-like color, the coral base makes it wearable and doesn’t scream look at my lips and not me.
Final Thoughts
I am definitely obsessed with these lipsticks, and I know they will be my go to shades throughout the summer and even longer. If you are like me and prefer creamy bullet lipsticks over liquid lipsticks, you should absolutely take the Tōn Quiz Today and pick up the shades best for your skin tone, plus a few extra. You definitely will not regret it!
